BAPA is the largest local professional association in the San Francisco Bay Area and growing strong! We are here to serve your needs of being connected to a professional and collegial community of mental health practitioners, providing opportunities for continued professional growth and development, staying informed and having community discourse on local, state and national issues affecting mental health, and finding ways to be of support and service to the communities we serve.

Who can join and how much does it cost?

Anyone who works or studies in the mental health field directly or affiliated with it can join BAPA. We offer several different types of memberships. Costs vary by type of membership. Membership is renewed annually every January.

Types of Memberships

Those who hold a doctorate in psychology or an equivalent degree, or are licensed as a psychologist in California or have a Diploma from the American Board of Professional Psychology. Full Members have all of the rights and privileges of BAPA membership including the right to vote and serve on the Board.

Those who hold a doctorate in psychology granted three years (3) or less prior to membership. New Doctorate Members enjoy the same rights and privileges as Full Members, including the right to vote or serve on the Board.

Those who hold a master’s degree in a mental health discipline (e.g., MFT, LCSW, LPC, etc.) or a related degree (e.g., MD, JD, etc). Associate Members have all of the rights and privileges of BAPA membership except the right to vote or serve on the Board.

Those who are enrolled in a graduate psychology program or are engaged in a postdoctoral psychology training program. Student Members shall have all of the rights and privileges of BAPA membership except the right to vote or serve on the Board (unless they are appointed to the Board as a Student Representative).

Those who are

  1. 65 or older and have been a member of the BAPA (SCCPA and/or SMCPA) for twenty (20) years,
  2. Over 72 and retired, or
  3. Permanently Disabled and cannot work.

Life Members retain the rights and privileges of the membership class that they previously held, including the right to vote and serve on the Board.

By joining BAPA you will be part of a greater Bay Area community of mental health professionals consisting of a diverse group of psychologists, MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, AMFTs, psychiatrists, attorneys, and students who work in various capacities in the diverse mental health field.

  • Social and Networking opportunities with other mental health practitioners at member happy hours and coffees, networking opportunities at various workshops and talks, annual member holiday party, annual member picnic, student events, and new member gatherings.
  • Advocacy and Representation. BAPA is a chapter of the California Psychological Association, and BAPA advocates with elected officials for issues impacting our profession.
  • Opportunities for Community Involvement by offering talks in the community and participating in community events (such as PRIDE, May Mental Health Awareness Month, NAMI walk and more).
